"From the "QUATRAINS"
Come, oh cupbearer, and bring, for our hearts' sake [...]
bring an amphora of wine, that we may toast together. [...]
Like the tulip of April, take in hand the round cup
if you are fortunate enough to linger with a rosy cheek. [...]
I know nothing, I know not if He who created me
made me for Heaven or destined me to Hell.
But a cup and a fair maiden and a lute on the edge of the meadow
are ringing coins to me: to you, the promissory note of Heaven! [...]
They say: there will be, hereafter, Paradise and maidens.
They say: there will be, down there, both wine and struggles and honey.
What harm is there then if, here, we choose wine and lovers
when, at the end of it all, it will still be so?
With a fair maiden by the stream, and wine, and roses,
as long as it is granted me, I shall revel in pure joy."
