"The German bishop Johannes Fugger, a great admirer of wines, descending from the North towards Rome, used to have a servant of his trust precede him, who visited the taverns and wrote with chalk on the door of those where he had drunk well, 'est vinum bonum', here is good wine, or, more quickly, 'est', which in Latin corresponds to our 'yes'. Arriving in Montefiascone, he found the local wine clearly superior to all those drunk in the numerous previous stops, and to communicate to his master, distanced by several taverns, his enthusiastic appreciation, he wrote on the door 'est est est'. Three times. The Monsignor, as soon as he arrived, drank so much of it that he died, and the sorrowful servant dictated this epitaph: 'Est est est propter nimium est hic Ioannes de Foucris dominus meus mortuus est' (because of too much est here Johannes Fugger, my master, died). So they say of Giovanni Fugger."
